Cardiff University and the Guardian Media Group have announced a new Masters programme which will see students study a year long degree with a focus on digital media and journalism. Still subject to validation the course will start taking students from next year and will be based in London.
As a Cardiff alumni I want to wish them every success with this new endeavour. During the broadcast postgraduate diploma students are taught the basic fundamentals of writing online but I think it will be interesting to see what the first intake of this new programme produces.
The Guardian is pioneering new ways of telling stories online, but from talking to other students the focus on Cardiff’s Masters programmes always had a larger research and academic element. Rather than the relentless focus on practical technical skills undertaken by the Diploma students.
Also I believe this is the first Cardiff endorsed academic programme which is not based in Wales. It will be interesting to see if this scheme offers healthy competition to their arch rivals City University.
